Moulded gaskets

Moulded GasketsSilicone, EPDM, NBR, FKM, neoprene and more

A moulded gasket comes out of the press in its finished shape. It costs more to tool than an extrusion, and it earns that back when the part is small, critical, quick to fit, or has corners too tight for an extruded section to follow.

What we mould

Sizes, cavities and materials

We compression mould and step mould.

Process
Compression moulding and step moulding
Size in one mould
2 mm to 1 m
Longer parts
Step moulded. Our longest so far is 25 m
Largest mould
About 1 m × 1 m
Cavities
Depends on the part. Many of our moulds have over 300
Hardness
20 to 90 Shore A
Materials
Silicone, EPDM, NBR, FKM, neoprene and others
Tolerance
Standard industry tolerances, or as specified by the customer
Longer than the press

A 25 metre moulding

Step moulding cures a long part one section at a time, so the length is not limited by the size of the press. The longest we have made is a 25 metre silicone sponge moulding for a dehumidifier manufacturer.

Finishing

No knives, no scissors

Every product we mould has a tear-trim edge designed into the mould. The flash tears off along that edge, so all our finishing is done without tools and without scissors.

Moulds

Every cavity is checked before we mould

The 3D model and the mould are both made here. A mould is ready within 7 days, and moulds start from ₹10,000. That is a starting price; the real figure depends on the part.

Before production starts, someone checks every cavity. On a 36-cavity mould that is 36 checks. On a mould with over 300 cavities, it is every one of them.

The mistake we see most

Sometimes the fix is a softer rubber

The design mistake we see most in moulded gaskets is the wrong material. We have seen many failing gaskets start working just by lowering the hardness or changing the grade, without touching the design.

This is especially true of IP problems, where water or dust is getting past the seal. A softer gasket adapts to the small imperfections in the surfaces it seals against, and that is often exactly where the water was getting in.

Moulded or extruded

When a mould is worth paying for

Mould it when the gasket is small, extremely critical, needs to be fitted quickly on your line, or has a complicated shape with tight radii. If the gasket is hollow, large, or the budget is tight, an extruded gasket or a joined gasket is usually the better buy.

Questions

Moulded gaskets

Compression moulding and step moulding. Step moulding lets us make parts longer than any single mould, up to 25 m so far.

From 2 mm up to 1 m in one mould. Our largest mould is about 1 m × 1 m. Longer parts are step moulded.

It depends on the part and what is practical. Many of our moulds have over 300 cavities, and every cavity is checked before production starts.

Every mould has a tear-trim edge built in. The flash tears off along it, so our finishing is done without tools or scissors.

20 to 90 Shore A.

From ₹10,000, ready within 7 days, because the 3D model and the mould are both made in-house. The real figure depends on the part.
