About UsMoulded and extruded rubber component manufacturer in Howrah, Kolkata

Silton Rubber was established in 1984 by Shri Akhil Chandra Jain at Daspara, Howrah. The firm began with jute mill components and general rubber parts, manufactured to order on a small plot of land.

Forty-two years later, the company operates from Liluah with compounding, tooling, moulding, extrusion and testing carried out in-house. The nature of the work is unchanged.

Company history

Four decades

1984
Foundation

Established by Shri Akhil Chandra Jain at Daspara, Howrah. Production consisted of jute mill components and general rubber parts.

1990s
Silicone, and the OEM years

By the mid-1990s Silton was supplying gaskets to a widening list of OEMs, and it was those customers who brought the first silicone requirements. Few rubber makers in eastern India were working with silicone then. Taking the work on meant learning to compound and cure it in-house, and silicone has been the firm’s strongest material since.

2002
United States market

Silton components entered the United States market, a supply relationship that continues today.

2004
Second generation

Abhishek Jain joined the business, working alongside his father.

2006
Continuous vulcanising, and relocation

The first automated microwave continuous vulcanising extrusion line was commissioned. The Daspara premises could not accommodate it. Operations relocated to Gaushala, at 34/1 N. S. Road, Liluah, where the company continues to operate.

2008
A second line, dedicated to silicone

A second continuous vulcanising line was commissioned and given over to silicone alone. Running silicone on its own line removed the risk of carry-over from other compounds and freed the first line for EPDM and general rubber. It is the reason soft silicone sections became routine work here rather than a special order.

2012
Tooling brought in-house

A CNC toolroom was established on site. Moulds and extrusion dies have since been designed and cut in-house, reducing lead time on new dies from weeks to days.

Succession

Following the passing of Shri Akhil Chandra Jain, Abhishek Jain assumed charge as second-generation owner, after ten years in the business.

Manufacturing principles

Three things that have not changed

Made to specification

Silton does not hold a catalogue. Components are manufactured to a customer drawing, a physical sample, or a stated requirement. This includes reverse engineering of worn imported parts where the original is no longer available.

An integrated manufacturing process

Compound mixing, mould making, curing and testing are performed within the same facility. Although this might not be the most cost-effective way of producing gaskets, it is the only one in which we can reliably produce consistent material.

Accuracy on materials

An incorrectly specified elastomer rarely fails on the test bench. Silton states the limitations of a compound before a quotation is issued.

Management

Who you will be dealing with

Abhishek Jain, second-generation owner. With the company since 2004 and in charge since 2014.

Manufacturing is carried out at 34/1 N. S. Road, Liluah, Howrah, with a commercial office at Alipore, Kolkata. Details of plant and equipment are set out on the manufacturing process page, and material capability on the materials page.

The deepest capability is in silicone gaskets and silicone extrusion, including soft sections down to 30 Shore A. EPDM moulded gaskets and EPDM extrusions run on a dedicated line of their own, down to 40 Shore A.

Case File · A True Story

The wrong polymer is an expensive mistake.

A manufacturer of outdoor luminaires supplies the Government of India on a long-warranty contract. Their gaskets came from another vendor, and the first lot failed in the field within the first couple of weeks: water got past the gaskets and killed the electronics. The neoprene had hardened in the heat of the luminaire. A hard gasket does not spring back, and one that does not spring back does not seal.

They brought the problem to us. We redesigned the gasket in silicone. The new cross-section weighs 40% less than the old one, seals perfectly, and will provide a long service life.
